COMMITTEE STILL PLANS TO SUBMIT PETITION FOR NEW COMMUNITY COLLEGE

An organization that is pushing for a new community college in Brazos County says it still plans on submitting a petition to the Brazos County Commissioners Court.

The Research Valley Partnership’s Brazos Talent Initiative Steering Committee says they had to pull the petition from Tuesday’s meeting for clerical reasons.

The committee began the push for a new community college last fall, saying Blinn College wasn’t meeting the workforce needs in Brazos County. The group gathered approximately 13,000 signatures from Brazos County voters, asking for the new community college.

The petition was scheduled to be brought before the commissioners court on Tuesday, but at the last minute the organization decided to pull it from the agenda and go over the signatures one more time.

If the petition signatures are verified by the commissioners court, the Research Valley Partnership would have to submit those signatures to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for consideration.

The board would consider the proposal before approving the process to move forward. The soonest the issue could be brought to Brazos County voters is next fall.

On Tuesday, Blinn College released the following statement:

Regardless of today’s petition submission, Blinn College will continue to focus on providing academic and workforce training excellence in the Brazos Valley and throughout its service area. We look forward to expanding these services to the RELLIS Campus in partnership with The Texas A&M System, and continuing to serve students through innovative partnerships and student-centered leadership.”
