CONROE POLICE OFFICER GETS PROBATION FOR FATAL SHOOTING

A Conroe police sergeant who was convicted this week for fatally shooting an alleged shoplifter last year, was given a probated sentence for the incident.

Thirty-year old Sgt. Jason Blackwelder could have been sentenced up to 20 years in prison after the manslaughter conviction Tuesday.

Blackwelder shot 19-year Russell Rios, as he fled to a wooded area near a Conroe Wal-Mart in July of last year.

The probated sentence did not sit well with the victim’s mother who shouted ‘No justice! No justice for my son!’ after the sentence was read.

Blackwelder said he was acting in self defense when he shot Rios.  He said Rios had choked him and he feared for his life, during the incident.

  1. No justice is correct. If this were a citizen and not a police officer, it would be a capital murder case. The system has failed.
