CONSTRUCTION MAY BEGIN AT TEXAS WORLD SPEEDWAY SITE

After several years of delays, it appears construction is set to begin on a large housing development at the current location of Texas World Speedway, south of College Station.

Bill Mather, CEO of the Southern Pointe Land Development Company, says the project has taken a lot longer than originally thought.

Mather bought the speedway in 2007. Since then, he has rented out the speedway to different organizations and companies.

In 2015, city leaders approved development and annexation of the 550 acre housing development.

Mather says his intention is to create affordable homes for young families in that area.

First phase of construction was expected to be completed by June of 2016. But they have yet to break ground.

According to Mather, the delay is not ideal, but he knows the process is more than just the construction aspect of building homes.

Mather is optimistic they'll meet future deadlines.

Southern Pointe is expected to be one of the largest single-family residential communities in Brazos Valley, with 1,400 homes and nature trails.
