Two years ago Brenham school district voters overwhelmingly approved a $26 million bond issue to renovate the middle school and build a new Alton Elementary School.
This led to a year of planning, designs and meetings about the progress of these projects. Then about a year ago, construction began on the two schools.
Now, the construction is so far along, it is certain that both schools will be ready for the school year that begins in August. Tuesday was the day and time to lay the cornerstone for both schools. That is always the duty of the local Masonic Lodge.
Dr. Robert Stark or the Graham Lodge #20 says the cornerstone laying is symbolic of all the work that has been done with the construction effort.
The cornerstone at the middle school was laid Tuesday morning and the cornerstone was laid at the new Alton Elementary School in the afternoon.
