COUNTY COMMISSIONERS APPROVE MASS GATHERING PERMIT

Washington County Commissioners approved the Mass Gathering Permit this (Tuesday) morning for a Spartan Race on the Eberly Ranch this weekend.  Organizers say they expect to have 7000 people at the event south of Chappell Hill.  County Emergency Management Coordinator Bryan Ruemke said he has visited the site and everything seems to be in place. The organizers will have their own medics on the obstacle course and are paying for 2 EMS ambulances to be at the event.  They are also hiring 4 off-duty Sheriff’s Deputies to be on hand and to assist in parking.  Precinct 3 Commissioner Kirk Hanath said that this was the first Mass Gathering Permit the county has dealt with and he was glad it was with this group because they have been so responsive and professional.  Spartan Races is a national organization that holds 66 race events per year across the US.

In other action, the commissioners approved consolidating the polling locations for the special election on May 5th.  That election will be to fill the unexpired term for District 13 State Representative.  County Clerk Beth Rothermel said the polling locations will be:

Pct. 1 – The Washington Co. Events Center
Pct. 2 – The VFW Hall
Pct. 3 – The Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library
Pct. 4 – The Blinn College Student Center

The commissioners also approved the purchase of Emergency Vehicle Equipment from Lone Star Products for the Sheriff’s Office.  Sheriff Otto Hanak said this was the standard equipment found in Deputy vehicles and is in this year’s budget.

Commissioners also approved the RePlat of two tracts in the South Berlin Subdivision.

  1. How would this have played out had the Commissioners Court not approved the permit application?

    1. The Chappell Hill area needs the county to provide this type of permitting and security because the area is not incorporated as a city like Burton or Brenham.

      1. The property where this event is planned is not in Chappell Hill. I don’t understand why it would matter if Chappell Hill were incorporated or not? Even if it were, the event would still be taking place ‘in the county,’ and permitting would be the same, right?
