COUNTY COMMISSIONERS DISCUS ROAD & BRIDGE MOVE

Washington County commissioners will continue their discussions on a new facility for the county’s Road and Bridge Department.

At Tuesday’s Comissioners’ Court meeting, members reviewed County Engineer Don Werth’s concept, which includes offices and other features for road and bridge, rural addressing and environmental departments.

Next Tuesday, the commissioners will consider requesting qualifications from architects for the design.

The county owns over 21 acres of property just north of the Brenham on Highway 36, where they plan to move Road and Bridge from its current location on Blue Bell Road.

  1. Why do we have to spend TAX money on an architect when any reputable builder of a metal building with office space can design and build said structure with input from the future users of said building? Its done every day by private businesses.

    1. It is a state law. A new office/building owned by a public agency and to be used by the public requires an architect. Most single story buildings/shops for private businesses are exempt from the Architectural Act.

  2. I agree with the decision to move the road and bridge department to the new location out of town. The current location has increasing traffic and is in a difficult ingress and digress spot.
My one concern is if the new building is going to be a standard building dressed up with some brick and color or a magnificent edifice drawn up by an architect with a lot of over priced additions. It’s the tax payers money and needs to be spent wisely.

    1. The road and bridge department deals with weather, dust, dirt, rock, grease and stinky black asphalt. Magnificent edifice is not even in the road and bridge department’s vocabulary.
