COUNTY COMMISSIONERS HEAR MONTHLY REPORTS

Washington County Commissioners accepted a $35,000 grant from the Texas Department of Public Safety at their meeting this morning (Tuesday).  This is the first year the county has applied for the grant and it will go towards Emergency Management for the county.

Commissioners appointed Russell Seeker to the County Fairgrounds Management Board.  He will be replacing Joyce Boeker who is stepping down from the board.

Commissioners heard a number of monthly reports.  County Sheriff Otto Hanak said that the number of livestock out calls were up due the spring floods having damaged fences in the county.  He also noted the number of arrests were up.  He attributed it to students being out of school:

Emergency Communications Director Nathan Preston updated the commissioners on the 911 center.  He noted that the average time from when a call comes in to when a unit is dispatched is down to 49 seconds.  He attributed the reduction to the expansive training that the dispatchers undergo:

.

Preston also noted that currently 85 percent of calls coming to dispatch are from cell phones, only 11 percent come from wire phones, mostly from businesses.  He said they are working on implementing texting to 911 and plan on providing that option to the public soon.

County IT Director Jerry Harris said that his department is currently working to move county offices to a new phone network and that the courthouse phones should be transferred in the next few weeks.  When asked by commissioner Hanath if the county was off of the city’s computer network, Harris stated that the county was off and that they should not be paying the city for any network hosting.

Justin Knuppel presented the monthly EMS report.  He noted that the out of county transfers were down for the month.  He also said that reimbursement for the squad unit that was damaged in the flood in Corsicana is expected soon.  That unit has since been repaired and is back in service.
