CUBETTES ADVANCE WITH OVERTIME WIN!!!

The Brenham Cubettes dominated Palestine’s Lady Cats from the beginning Thursday night, but it took overtime for the Cubettes to advance, with a 4-1 win in the Region III/4A Sectional Round.

Brenham outshot Palestine, 23-5 for the night, but only found the back of the goal once in regulation.

The Cubettes (17-5-4) took the lead in the 23^rd minute of the first half when Kourtney Hajek found Au’Dresha Spates speeding down the middle of the field.  Spates fired the ball past the Lady Cats’ keeper for a 1-0 lead.

Despite out-shooting Palestine, 12-3 in the first 40 minutes, the lead at halftime remained 1-0.

Palestine (19-5-2) got the equalizer early in the second half, when Gabby Myers’ cornerkick found an open Lauryn James on the back side for an open header into the Cubette goal.

While the Cubettes continued to put the pressure on the Lady Cats, they weren’t able get the go-ahead score before the end of regulation.

In the sixth minute of overtime, the Cubettes took the lead for good, when a pass from Maria Aguado found Spates for an open header, and a 2-1 lead.  For Spates, it was her team-leading 19^th goal of the season; and her sixth in three playoff games.

Just over two minutes later, Ana Brans extended the Cubettes’ lead to 3-1 as she squeezed a shot inside the goalpost from a nearly impossible angle.  Brans said after the game that it was intended to be a crossing pass that found the goal.

Angel Darcus put the exclamation point on the win with a goal in the second overtime on a pass from Hannah Emsoff.

Coach Brandon Kluck credited the Cubettes’ defense for keeping the Palestine attack away from keeper Cassie Musser for nearly the entire night.

In particular he credited the play of Brittney Wagers, who moved from midfield to defender for this game.  Wagers continually made stop after stop, keeping the Lady Cats’ offense from making any real advance into the Cubettes’ end of the field.

Brenham advances to the Region Quarterfinals next Monday or Tuesday against the winner of Friday’s game between Vidor and Lumberton.
