CUBETTES’ SEASON ENDS WITH 5-2 LOSS TO ELGIN
The Brenham Cubettes’ softball season came to an end Saturday afternoon at Cedar Creek as Elgin finished a two-game Area Playoff sweep with a 5-2 win.
Brenham (16-11) jumped out to the early 2-0 lead as Maddie Weatherly drove in both Cubette runs with a two-out single. Annie Cangelosi and Hannah Schwartz scored on Weatherly’s hit, giving her all four Cubette rbi’s in the two-game series.
Elgin (22-4) took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Jamie Johns drove home Kaitlyn Nelson with a single. Haley Krenek scored on Haily Barron’s sacrifice fly.
Victoria Gonzalez then broke the 2-2 tie with a sacrifice fly that plated Johns.
The Cubettes came just inches away from re-claiming the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Macie Becker crushed a shot down the line with two runners on, but the ball hooked foul by the slimmest of margins.
The next batter Reaghan Kwiatkowski, just missed a three-run home as she pulled a blast just a couple feet foul.
Lady Kat pitcher Stacy Johns was able to get both Becker and Kwiatkowski to maintain the one-run lead.
Elgin added two insurance runs in the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Designated Player Cady Norton.
Becker (4-3) took the loss for the Cubettes, going all six inning and giving up three earned runs on eight hits. She struck out one batter and didn’t walk anyone.
Staci Johns picked up the win, scattering five hits, while giving up two unearned runs and striking out three.
Autumn Pauler went two-for-three, while Weatherly, Cangelosi and Ashley Hodde each added a single.
Jaymie Johns and Staci Johns each had two hits for the Lady Kats, who advance to the Region Quarterfinals to face Willis, who swept a two-game series with Stratford.
