  1. The comments posted on our website concerning the Brenham High School softball team and its coach are unfortunate for several reasons. First, this is a terrific group of talented girls whose coach cares deeply about them and their success. Their three district losses have all been close, and came against very talented opponents (the last against a University of Texas pitching commit). Despite heartbreaking back-to-back losses, they are tied for second place in a tough district. The timing of the criticism could not be worse, as this team needs everyone working as one to reach the playoffs (and that includes parents and supporters). Most people, including parents, have no idea about the time and effort coaches put into their jobs. They only see them at the games or occasionally after practice. They don’t see the long hours the coaches spend away from their families for early morning practices, late afternoon practices, out of town tournaments and long bus rides. A coach’s job doesn’t end when the last kid is picked up after practice or a game. Coaching is a lifestyle, and it doesn’t look to me to be an easy one. But it’s one that these folks have chosen because they love the sport, and they love coaching kids. I don’t think there is a coach at Brenham High School that doesn’t want to win, and is not doing everything in his or her power to accomplish that. No coach is perfect. They are all going to make mistakes. The only coaches that are always right are the ones sitting in the stands. Let’s support the Brenham Cubettes and their coach as they battle through the second half of district. For all of the hard work they have put in, it’s the least we can do.

    1. Tom, thank you and the staff at KWHI for always going above and beyond when it comes to our community. Ed Pothul has been our heart beat and keeps our sports blood pumping.

I agree with you, the timing stinks but thank your for allowing everyone’s voices to be heard. This is very painful to many because we do love our girls and want only the best for them.

Go Cubettes! We are behind you all the way.

  2. Back when I played there were high expectations, challenging workouts and practices and a coaching staff that I admire to this day. My four years could not have been better and unfortunately, I doubt the current group of players could say the same. It’s a shame to see the program go so far down-hill. They may have a “good” overall record but let’s not forget their preseason schedule was full of “for sure” wins. Back then, we played big name 5A (now 6A) schools and learned how to compete with the best. We lost some games but by the time district play came around we were ready for anyone. Coach would not hesitate getting in our face if we made a mistake…..now all they get is a pat on the back and “you’ll get it next time.” We got punished being late or breaking team rules. The current players don’t receive any criticism or critique about their at-bats. Do not even get me started with favoritism….when I was in high school, you got to play because you were the best, not because you babysat coach’s kids. Bottom line, they should have hired someone else with more experience, someone professional enough to be a coach and mentor to these kids. There were plenty of people that applied with lots experience that would have made a great head coach.

  3. I believe that you are entitled to your own opinion. However this is not the time during season nor the way you need to be venting your frustrations. For one, if you have that strong of opinion try going to the coaches and voicing that. For two, this is only the second game of the second round many different things could happen from here. This negativity being put out there at this time could end up effecting how the rest of the season goes. For three, I have been around this program for a long time and yes there have been struggles in the past but in the last 3 years I have seen improvement and obviously as time goes on everyone and everything gets better. Last do not attack the coaches who put in many hours of time and effort for this softball program. We all want a successful Cubette Softball program and it takes people willing to put in their time to make that happen. So, until you put your time and effort into this program don’t attack the people who willing do!!

    1. It is not the time for this nor the way to go about addressing concerns. Hopefully all of this will just fuel the girls’ fire to win, win, win, instead of making the wheels fall off. Also, I hope the coaches know that this kind of stuff from parents and fans happens in all sports and they just have to let it roll off their backs and use the criticism in a POSITIVE way to help make the girls better. GO CUBETTES!

    2. The sad thing is the people making these comments have put in the time as parents, players, volunteers and supports. And many of the former players continue to put in the time as they have become coaches themselves. They know what it takes.

When is a good time to post a negative comment? There isn’t one.

Now is the time to take a good hard look at the program and start making decisions for next year.

This is a head coaching position we are talking about, not a spot for someone to be learning how to coach.

  4. If you are that concerned why hide behind a keyboard? Post your real name, so you can lead the angry mob. You are obviously a disgruntled parent, and my advice is to meet with the coach to express your concerns. Don’t plaster it on the Internet for everyone to see including the kids on the team. Classy move there. This is what’s wrong with kids today. It’s never their fault. It can’t be their fault. Blame everyone else. Sometimes you just get beat, and you have to learn how to deal with it and get better from it.

    1. This is the opinion of a tight knit community whose blood runs green, not one parent. It is the fans, families, supporters, players and everyone that has been dedicated to the program for years. It is the fault of those who decided to hire someone without any coaching experience to be a head coach. Regardless of who the coach is, it set her up for failure. Would they do this for football or baseball?

These girls who have been playing softball since they were 5 years old and the parents who have been with them every step of the way and have invested in their future deserve more.

This is a critical time for these girls looking to get scholarships. They need to be at their best and the coaching needs to be at it’s best.

It should not matter what your name is, only what’s best for the program. If it is a salary issue, shame on the administrators.

    2. Why does the name matter? If there is an angry mob as you state then there is probably a problem that needs to be addressed.

Blame …. What is your name? Why are you hiding behind a keyboard?

    3. It doesn’t matter what my name is right now or what my relationship is to them. I just might be that disgruntled parent or I might not be. Maybe I’m a grandparent, aunt or uncle. Or maybe I’m a close friend and fan of those girls. It really doesn’t matter who I am. What I said needed to be said and I stepped up and said it.

  5. These girls are amazing! They are doing their job, both defensively and offensively, in every single game. I’m not sure you could ask them for any thing more. They deserve so much more – like a varsity coaching staff that is experienced with current strategies of this fast paced game, someone who knows how to play “small-ball” with the best of them, someone who is gonna coach and guide them in the batters box. Not someone who is gonna tell them things that you tell a 6 year old who is starting to play softball. They don’t “squish” bugs anymore. They don’t run at the batter with their arm and ball in the air. They don’t like to look at the coach and see that the coach is walking off with her hands on her head like she is disgusted because they swung their bat and missed. They want to see a coach that is standing there nodding their head with an okay and telling them they were late, they were early, they dropped their shoulder, etc. They are just looking for some guidance. Is that too much to ask? There is so much talent in that organization right now and it’s a shame that some of that talent is being wasted.

Shame on those people who thought it was a good idea to hire an inexperienced person for a head coaching position that was once one of the top softball programs in the state. But yet it doesn’t surprise me one bit when you have other coaches staffing a high school sport that they probably know nothing about. I guess what they said about this fiasco is true – there was no money to hire a qualified coached because no one wants to take a pay cut to come here. Maybe administration should look into this before this program ends up as “that” program that goes 1-8 at this point in the season.

    1. Agreed. This is probably why they haven’t even been able to win district when for so many years it was not even a question. The competition did not get better, the coaching got worse. You can do team building all you want but when the coach lacks basic strategy the team is already one step behind. The girls at Brenham grow up living and breathing softball and their coach should too. It saddens me to see the program go downhill when there is an abundance of talent on the team. The coach should always believe in the girls, even when they don’t believe in themselves. I hope the right person takes notice and the girls get a chance to get a coach who will be dedicated to the program. Dedication is not just being at practices or games, it is preparing yourself and the team for every single opponent. The goal in Brenham should be to win state, and has been prior to the last couple of seasons. It is hard to watch them struggle to even win a district game. Maybe the pre season games should have been against better teams in preperation for district instead of the run rules they had. Please somebody do the right thing for the girls, they deserve the best.
