CUBETTES SURVIVE BI-DISTRICT BATTLE WITH CONNALLY
Teaira McCowan and Alencia Woodberry dominated inside as the Brenham Cubettes survived the opening round of the playoffs with a 63-56 win over Pflugerville Connally at the Hearn gymnasium, Tuesday.
McCowan scored 25 points, while pulling down 27 rebounds and blocked seven shots. Woodberry added 15 points with 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.
The game resembled a chess match between two masters, Cubettes head coach Chante’ Crutchfield and celebrated Lady Cougars head coach Candi Harvey. The two continuously switched defenses and offensive sets looking for every possible edge.
The Cubettes (28-3) jumped out to a 12-point lead (26-14) after the first quarter, led by McCowan and Woodberry who combined for 17 points in the quarter.
The Cubettes extended the lead to 14 by the half (38-24), with the 6’8” McCowan scoring 17 of her team’s 38 points.
However, the start of the second half was dominated by the Lady Cougars and Connally’s defense forced a slew of Cubettes turnovers, leading to a 12-1 run, cutting the Brenham lead to just three points.
Angel Darcus’ three-pointer keyed a 7-3 run to close out the third quarter, extending the Cubettes’ lead back to seven, 46-39.
With the Lady Cougars concentrating on stopping McCowan, it was Woodberry who scored three key baskets, extending the Cubettes’ lead back to double-digits.
The Cubettes kept Connally in the game throughout the final minutes as they missed 12 of their 17 fourth-quarter free throws. But the Brenham defense came up big with key stops down the stretch and emerged with the win.
Darcus would finish with 14 points, while freshman guard Alicia Jackson pulled down 10 rebounds.
Connally was led by Azaria Miller with 16 points, while Shaniquia Coleman and Zhartaezia Bradley added 13 points each and Aaliyah Reid had 11.
Next up for the Cubettes will be Summer Creek, a 72-62 winner over Beaumont Central.
Details of that Area Round playoff game have yet to be announced.
