CUBS 2014 HALL OF HONOR CLASS ANNOUNCED

The Brenham Cubs Hall of Honor will recognize a standout running back and two all-star receivers at the organization’s annual luncheon Friday, Oct. 17 in the Blinn College Student Center.

Leroy Dryer, a member of the 1947 Cubs that garnered a tremendous upset over favorite Navasota to win the district crown; Limas Sweed, who was a standout performer for the 2002 state finalists; and Franklin Fisher, an all-star end for the district champion Cubs of 1957, will be enshrined in the hall of honor.

Also being honored is the Brenham Cubs team of 1971 that finished 13-1, losing in the state semifinals.

The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m., and former honorees and guests are encouraged to gather in the student center beginning at 11 a.m. The honorees, along with the 1971 team, will also be recognized prior to the kickoff of the Cubs game that evening.

Tickets are $25 and they are available from any member of the committee or at Brenham National Bank, Bank of Brenham or the BISD athletic office. Members of the committee are Melvin Ehlert Jr., Calvin Janner, Delbert Boeker, Val Kiecke, John Hasskarl, Charlie Matejowsky, Tommie Sullivan, Eddie Van Dyke, Charles Moser, Glen West and Tim Oehrlein.

Dreyer was a three-year letterman running back and defensive back for the Cubs, and was named all district and served as co-captain his senior year. Dreyer was a member of the Cub squad that upset an undefeated and unscored on Navasota team in 1947, giving the Cubs the district title after a 0-4 start to the season.

Dreyer was also an outstanding receiver for the Cubs, and he lettered three years in basketball as well as three years in track. He was a member of the Cubs state tournament basketball team.

He continued his athletic career at Blinn College and was named the Bucs first JUCO all-American in football. He also lettered in basketball and track at Blinn.

Upon graduating from the University of Houston, Dreyer coached and taught in Houston public schools for three years before returning to Blinn where he spent more than 40 years coaching football, baseball and serving as athletic director.

Franklin Fisher

Fisher, a three-year letterman, was a key member of the 1957 Cubs team that went 10-2 before losing to Nederland in the regional finals.

Showing great versatility, he saw action at offensive and defensive end, fullback and punter for the Cubs his senior season. He was all-district and honorable mention all-state at the end position.

He scored equally well from the fullback slot and as a receiver, garnering three touchdowns playing each position.

Fisher received a football scholarship to Texas A&M University where he was a two year letterman, playing offensive and defensive end. The 6-1, 197 pound junior scored a touchdown against Rice, making a “spectacular” catch according to the Aggie football guide of 1961.

Since his graduation from Texas A&M, Fisher has been engaged in international sales in Houston.

Sweed was a vital cog on the Cubs team of 2002 that was the first to reach the state finals, and he was one of the most productive pass receivers in the history of Brenham football.

He had a career total of 1,616 yards during his three years of varsity play. One half of that total yardage came during the 2002 campaign. For a career, he had 25 touchdowns, with 13 coming during the 2002 season.

Sweed had 70 catches during the Cubs march to the state finals in 2002. He received all-district and all-state honors his junior and senior seasons. He was a standout defensive player for the Cubs as a sophomore.

He received a football scholarship to the University of Texas where he starred for the Longhorns.

Sweed lettered three years and received all-Big 12 honors two years. He caught a total of 124 passes, placing him sixth all-time among Longhorn receivers. He caught 15 TD passes during his career.

He spent three years in the National Football League.

Sweed is currently teaching and coaching in the Hays Consolidated School District.

Brenham Cubs of 1971

The Brenham Cubs of 1971 went 13-0 before losing to Gregory-Portland in the state semifinals game played in San Marcos.

The Cubs would repeat as state semi-finalists the following year.

The 1971 Cubs proved to be one of the most prolific offensive and defensive units in Brenham’s elite grid history with a strong running game and relentless defense. Team members present at the luncheon will be introduced.
