CUBS CLINCH FIFTH-STRAIGHT DISTRICT TITLE
The 2013 Brenham Cubs have done something no other Cubs team has done before…ever. The Cubs clinched their fifth-straight District Championship with a 63-21 win over long-time rival Huntsville, Friday night at Bowers Stadium.
The Cubs broke open a close game at half time, dominating the second half in all three phases; outscoring the Hornets, 35-0.
The Cubs broke out to a 21-0 lead by early in the second quarter as Earnest Patterson ran for scores of 3, 18 and 24 yards.
But Huntsville cut the lead to 21-14 on a 30-yard run by Harold Johnson and an 80-yard reception by Morie Evans.
Patterson, who come into the game with a district-leading 1223 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns, scored once-again, from 12 yards away.
The suddenly-surging Hornets responded with yet another big play, a 79-yard pass from Ryan Bristow to Daquon Jankins, cutting the half-time lead to 28-21.
The second half belonged to the Cubs. Malik Wilson sprinted 81-yards untouched with the second-half kickoff, and the Cubs never looked back.
Walter Thomas and Ja’Michael Adams each ran for two second half touchdowns, while the defense held the Hornets to just three first downs and less that 70 yards total offense over the final 24 minutes.
The Cubs special teams also came up big as ten of the Hornets 11 possessions begin inside their own 25-yard line.
Patterson would finish the night with 211 yards rushing and four touchdowns, while Adams had 58 yards and Thomas added 53.
The Cubs will close out their regular season at home with the Caney Creek Panthers, Friday night at 7:30 at Cubs Stadium.
The game can be heard live on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
