CUBS DOWN MUSTANGS, 6-2…FINALLY!

It took awhile, but the wait was worth it, as the Brenham Cubs downed Magnolia West, 6-2 in the District 18/4A opener, Thursday night in Magnolia.

The game, originally slated for February 25th, had been rescheduled due to weather three times.

Junior right-hander Blake Wellmann kept the Mustangs’ hitters off balance all night in picking up the complete game victory.

It was the Mustangs, however, who took a first-inning lead, when Trevor Stephan’s double scored Justin Braziel.

The Cubs (6-6/1-0) evened up the game in the top of the third when Dylan Lester’s ground ball to short scored Zach Barnes.

Brenham took the lead the very next inning when Caleb Hill and Jacob Stegent each reached base on Mustangs’ errors.  A sacrifice fly by Dakota Brewton plated Hill and then Stegent scored on Barnes’ single.

Sam McElreath added to the Cubs’ lead with a solo home run to lead off the fifth.  Ryan Newman followed with a double.  Courtesy runner Jack Baker scored on Hill’s rbi-single.

A run-scoring single by Rayne Richard scored Jaquay Cross with the Cubs’ final run.

The Mustangs tried to rally in the 7th with two on and one out, but Wellmann finished out the game by retiring the final two Magnolia West hitters.

Wellmann (2-0) finished with six strikeouts and no walks, as he gave up two earned runs on seven hits.

The Cubs will be back in action Saturday, when they host Waller at 1:00 at Firemen’s Park.  The game can be heard on KWHI beginning with the pre-game show at 12:40.
