CUBS EDGE COUGARS, TAKE SERIES

In a sharp contrast to Thursday’s 18-0 opener, the Crosby Cougars gave the Brenham Cubs all they could handle, before the Cubs pulled out a 10-9 win and a two-games-to-none series win in the Area Playoffs.

The game, which was originally scheduled for Firemen’s Park, was moved due to the weather to Georgetown Eastview.

Due to an earlier game between Leon and Shiner, the Cubs/Cougars match-up did not begin until after 10:00 pm and did not finish until just before 1:00 am.

The game ended in dramatic fashion, as Jacob Stegent sent a two-out walk-off single up the middle, scoring Tyler Watts with the game-winning run.  Watts had reached on a single—his fourth hit of the night.  For Stegent the game-winner was his third hit of the evening.

The Cubs (23-8) had been on the verge of ending the game in the top of the seventh, but Crosby (21-12) rallied for two game-tying runs with two outs.  With runners on second and third, Mario Sequera singled to right field to knot the game at 9-9.

It was the Cubs who’d rallied earlier.  Trailing 7-4 in the bottom the third, Brenham struck for three runs on rbi-doubles by Blake Wellmann and Watts.

Brenham took the lead in the fifth on a groundball out by Stegent that scored Dylan Lester.

Teddy Hoffman gave the Cubs a two-run lead with a solo homer in the sixth.

Broc Bosse got the start for the Cubs before being chased in the third inning after giving up seven earned runs on eight hits.

Dakota Brewton came in for Bosse and threw two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings before Hoffman took over.  Hoffman got the Cubs out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth with back-to-back strikeouts.

Watts would lead the Cubs offense with four hits, including a double and triple, while scoring two runs and driving in two.  Stegent finished with three hits and three runs batted in.  Rayne Richard had three hits while scoring a run and driving in a run.

Sean Bergeron led the Cougars’ offense with a double, homer and four runs batted in.  Hunter Hearn had three base hits with two runs scored and two rbi’s.

Brenham advances to face the winner of a one-game playoff, Saturday night between Magnolia West and Kingwood Park.
