CUBS FALL IN REGION FINAL OPENER, 5-3
HUNTSVILLE – The Brenham Cubs will have to stage another come-from-behind win if they’re to advance to the 2017 State Baseball Tournament.
Wednesday night the Port Neches-Groves Indians scored twice in the sixth inning to pull out a 5-3 win in Game-one of the best-of-three Region Championship series.
PNG (31-8) got on the board first, off starting pitcher Chandler Jozwiak (10-2). Four hits by the Indians, including run-scoring singles from Austin Bost and Nathan Vidrine, staked the team to a 3-0 lead after three innings.
The Cubs (26-10) rallied to tie the score with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Zach Marshall drove home pinch runner Connor Klussmann with a double. Marshall the scored on Marshall Kohring’s sacrifice fly. Dane Acker, who reached on a walk, tied the game when he raced home on a throwing error.
The score remain tied until the top of the sixth inning when Haydon Guerra, who had three hits on the night, drove home Cameron Stansberry with a two-out single.
Eric Wellmann, on in relief of Jozwiak, issued a bases-loaded walk to Bost, providing the Indians with an insurance run.
The Cubs threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but shots by Marshall and Acker were caught on the warning track by Guerra in left field.
The Cubs managed to get the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but Brandon Morse, who picked up the complete game victory, closed the door on any Cubs’ hope for a comeback.
Brenham will now have to sweep a double header Friday night if they’re to continue the 2017 season.
Game-two is set for 6:00, back at Don Sanders Stadium at Sam Houston State. If necessary, game-three will follow by 30 minutes.
