CUBS HONOR VETRANS–THEN BEAT TOMBALL

The Brenham Cubs celebrated Veterans’ Night with a solid 5-2 win over Tomball at Firemen’s Park.  Four World War ll Verterans, Clarence Gaskamp, Raymond Walker, Gene Menking, and A.G. Holtkamp threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

After an emotional ceremony honoring all local veterans, the Cubs (17-9/7-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Pierce Weiss doubled to lead off the inning.  After a bunt by Jake Olson, pinch-runner Jason Kitzman scored on a double steal.  Olson later scored on a passed ball.

After the Cougars (16-7/8-3) got on the board with three hits in the second inning, the Cubs got the run back when Eric Wellmann, who had doubled, scored on a balk.

The Cubs tacked on two more runs in the fifth.  John Dickschat doubled, then scored on a passed ball.  A single by Wellmann drove home Olson.

Austin Derkowski picked up the win on the mound, going 5-1/3 innings, giving up one earned run, while striking out six.  Chris Kubeczka sealed the win with 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Cubs will travel to Willis to face the Wildkats, Friday night at 7:00.  The game can be heard on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
