CUBS ROLL PAST COUGARS, 11-4
The Brenham Cubs exploded for six runs over the final two innings to pull away to an 11-4 district win over Tomball, Wednesday night.
The win maintains the Cubs’ lead in District 20/5A at two games with just three left in the regular season.
Brenham trailed, 1-0 in the third inning, when they erupted for four runs.
The Cubs (17-6/10-1) opened the inning with consecutive singles from Davion Lockett, Darvis Watson and Chandler Jozwiak, tying the game at 1-1. The Cubs took the lead on a double-steal. Zach Marshall drove in a run with a single and then scored on an error.
Brenham extended its lead to 5-1 with an rbi-double by Dane Acker in the fourth.
The Cougars (18-8/7-4) cut the lead to 5-3 with four-straight singles in the fourth inning. But starting pitcher Eric Wellmann (5-1), with the bases loaded and no outs, shut the door by retiring the next three batters in order.
The Cubs broke open the tight contest with three runs in the sixth, highlighted by an rbi-triple from Acker, followed by a run-scoring single by Marshall.
Marshall added a two-run single in the seventh inning that extended the Cubs’ growing lead.
The Cubs will host Willis Friday night at 7:00 at Firemen’s Park in Brenham.
