CUBS ROLL PAST WILLIS, 7-0

Strong Brenham pitching and shaky Willis fielding propelled the Cubs to 7-0 win Tuesday night at Willis.

Cub pitchers Broc Bosse and Rayne Richard teamed up for a five-hit shutout, while the Cubs took advantage of eight Wildkat errors.

The Cubs (8-6/3-0) took the early lead in the second inning.  Jacob Stegent, who had reached on an error, scored on Sam McElreath’s rbi-single.

Stegent would give the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the third when his groundball out scored Teddy Hoffman who had doubled.

Brenham put three runs on the board in the fourth when McElreath drove home Courtland Sutton with a single.  Tyler Watts’ fielders choice then drove home Blake Paschal.  Watts later scored on a double-steal, upping the Cubs’ lead to 5-0.

Pascal’s second hit of the night drove in Stegent in the fifth.

“I was very pleased with our hitting,” said Cubs’ Coach Lanny Williams.  “We’ve been working hard on improving our offense.  We really hit the ball very hard tonight, even the outs were hit hard.”

In the meantime, Bosse (3-1) went five strong innings of shutout ball, scattering three hits and striking out six.  He did not walk a batter.

“Broc did a great job,” said Williams.  “He’s done a great job all year and did it again tonight.”

Bosse says his curve ball was the key, “I was able to throw it for strikes early on.  That let me get ahead of the hitters, which was huge.”

Richard pitched the final two innings to finish up the Cubs’ win.

Paschal would finish with two hits, a run and an rbi, while McElreath was 2-for-5 with 2 runs batted in.  Dakota Brewton was 2-4 with a double and Caleb Hill doubled in a run.

Willis’ defense also helped accommodate the Cubs.  The Wildkats committed at least one error in each inning of the game, finishing with eight for the night.

Elsewhere in 18/4A play Tuesday night:  Magnolia 9  Caney Creek 1; Magnolia West 1  Rudder 0; Montgomery 4  Waller 1.

The Cubs have two more games scheduled for rest of spring break.  Friday night they hose arch-rival Montgomery for a 7:00 game at Firemen’s Park.  Saturday afternoon the Cubs travel to Bryan to face Rudder at 4:00.

Both games can be heard on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
