CUBS SEASON COMES TO AN END

Hundreds of high school baseball teams in Texas would trade places right now with the Brenham Cubs—unfortunately, the Cubs would like to trade places with the George Ranch Longhorns.

Ryan Newman got the Cubs on the board with an rbi-double in the fourth.

The Longhorns (34-7) earned their first ever trip to the State UIL Baseball Tournament, defeating the Cubs, 8-2 Saturday afternoon at Firemen’s Park to complete a 2-0 sweep in the Region Finals.

The Cubs (27-11) never seemed to get on track against a George Ranch team that struck early, scoring a pair of runs before the Cubs could even come to bat.

The Longhorns ripped four-consecutive two-out hits to put the Cubs in a 2-0 hole after the top of the first.

That deficit grew to 4-0 with two more two-out runs in the third inning—chasing starting pitcher Jacob Stegent from the mound..

Tyler Watts tried to light a fire under the Cubs as caught the Longhorns nappig and turned a single into a double.

The Cubs jumped out and cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs.

The Cubs opened the inning on fire with a leadoff single by Stegent, followed by back-to-back doubles by Ryan Newman and Teddy Hoffman.  But that was as close as they would get.

George Ranch put  the game away in the top of the sixth inning as they ripped five-straight hits—including three doubles—to drive home four runs.

For Longhorns starting pitcher Kevin Kopps that was more than enough, as he held the Cubs to just five hits on the afternoon, while George Ranch backed Kopps’ effort with 19 hits off four Cubs’ pitchers.

The loss ends a season that saw the Cubs win their 42nd district championship in team history and their 31st consecutive trip to the playoffs.

The loss also prevents the Cubs from advancing to the State Final Four for the 17th time in school history.

Brenham loses four seniors from the 2014 teams…Tyler Watts, Dakota Brewton, Teddy Hoffman and Braden Baird,

Eleven players who started more than just an occasional game for the Cubs are expected to be back in 2015.
