CUBS’ SEASON ENDS WITH 38-20 LOSS TO CROSBY
The Cubs’ run through the 2014 season came to an end, Saturday night at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shanendoah, as Brenham (9-4) fell to Crosby (12-1) in the Region Semifinals, 38-20.
Crosby earned its first-ever trip to the Region Final against Hutto next Saturday at 2:00 at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos.
Hutto took advantage to a crucial penalty on the Cubs to extend their opening drive, which led to a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tristan Cotton.
The Cubs responded with a 68-yard drive that was capped off by Ernest Patterson’s 3-yard touchdown run, evening up the score at 7-7.
That tie was short-lived as the Cougars responded with an 80-yard drive, highlighted by a 45-yard run by running back Carlos Grace and an 8-yard touchdown pass from Cotton to Vernon Allen.
Brenham appeared poised to even the score once again as Patterson’s 54-yard run had the Cubs at the Crosby 13-yard line. But the drive stalled and the Cubs had to settle for a 30-yard Tien Pham field goal.
After a 45-yard touchdown run by Grace, the Cubs again ventured deep into Crosby territory, only to settle for a 38-yard Pham field goal.
Victor Villavuente, though, closed out the half with a 28-yard field goal, giving the Cougars a 24-13 halftime lead.
“I thought a big difference was they got down to the goal line and they scored touchdowns and we didn’t,” said Cubs’ head coach Glen West. “The converted on some big third down plays and we didn’t.”
Things were looking up for the Cubs early in the second half at Caleb Hill hit Patterson for a 30-yard gain to the Cougars’ 32-yard line, but Brenham would turn the ball over on downs.
Trevor Larkin caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Cotton for a 31-13 Crosby lead.
Brenham responded with a 62-yard drive that ended with a 15-yard pass from Hill to Shawn Weiss, cutting the lead to 31-20, but that was as close as the Cubs would get.
“They didn’t have any turnovers and we did. And, we missed tackles really bad…but, they’re a really good football team” said West.
Patterson would finish with 166 yard rushing and a touchdown on 23 carries. The senior tailback finishes his Cubs’ career as the only Cub to ever rush for over 5,000 yard (5,076). He also finishes the season with 2,332 yards, the second-best rushing season in Cubs’ history—eclipsed only by his own 2013 season of 2,439 yards.
He also finishes with 67 total touchdowns, passing the previous record held by Roosevelt Leaks and Matt Murski with 55 each. He also holds the single-season touchdown mark with 35, breaking Leaks’ previous record of 32.
“He’s an amazing kid. He came in at halftime and said ‘coach, put me in on defense, too’ and we did. He took this team when we were struggling and made us into a very good football team.”
Caleb Hill threw for 125 yard, giving him 4,804 yards for his career, trailing only Jarrett Lee (6,182 yds.) and Ty Schlottmann (4,958 yds.).
Hill finishes the season with 2,281 yards, fifth-best on the single-season yardage list. His 49 career touchdown passes also rank third-best in Cubs’ history.
Jaquay Cross finishes the season with 1,116 receiving yards—the record for yards receiving in a single season. His 18 touchdowns also tie him with Tremond Moore for the most in a season in Cubs’ history.
The Cubs finish the season 9-4, and advanced to the Region Semifinals for the eighth time in West’s 17 seasons as head coach.
Twenty-one seniors (12 starters) will be leaving the Cubs program, with the end of the 2014 season.
