CUBS SWEEP COUGARS DOUBLEHEADER TO TAKE SEMIFINAL SERIES

The Brenham Cubs could only extend the 2017 season if they swept Crosby in a doubleheader Friday night at Firemen’s Park – and they did exactly that.

The Cubs (26-9) downed the Cougars (29-5), 9-4 and 3-2 to take the Region Semifinal series, two games to one.

In the opener, the Cubs rode the pitching of Chandler Jozwiak and the bat of Dane Acker to a 9-4 win to even the series.

Jozwiak gave up a run in the first on a double by Daniel Balderrama and an rbi-ground out by Bryon McCoy.  But the Cubs’ senior lefty would retire the next nine consecutive hitters.

The Cubs, meanwhile, took the lead in the bottom of the second, on Acker’s first home run, followed by rbi-singles by Marshall Korhing and Darvis Watson.

Pierce Weiss increased the lead to 4-1 with a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Acker extended the lead in the fifth with his second solo homer, but two runs in the top of the sixth drew the Cougars within 4-to-3.

But Acker erased all thoughts of a Crosby comeback as he launched a grand slam in the sixth to seal the win that evened the series at one game each.

In the rubber game, it was the Cubs that drew first blood, as Watson led off with a single, then scored Weiss’ single.

Eric Wellmann, meanwhile, went six innings on the mound, holding the Cougars to one run on four hits while striking out six.

Acker came on to pitch the seventh, giving up a run on two hits, but strking out the last batter to preserve the win.

The Cubs now await the winner of the Tomball/Port Neches-Groves match up.  Tomball took game-one, Friday night, 6-1.

  1. What goes around, comes around!!

Another classless act out of District 21-5A

“There must be something in the water that District 21-5A drinks.

First it was the Humble Kingwood Park softball team being unsportsmanlike in its playoff series with Santa Fe. Then on Saturday, Crosby’s baseball team unfortunately added its name to the classless list.

Now at first I thought the Ball High folks were being sore losers, blaring out derogatory comments after the 4-1 loss that eliminated their Tors from the Class 5A postseason tournament.

But I had to see it for myself to actually believe sore winners still exist, sadly at the high school level when the competition between two schools is supposed to be nothing more than a game — no matter what’s at stake.

After the game, one of the spirit signs that Ball High hung at the ballpark was ripped in half by the Crosby side and kicked in the direction of the Tors’ dugout.

Now I did not personally see the sign being destroyed, which drew the initial outbursts from the Ball High bleachers, but I did see the Crosby player kick the torn sign toward the feet of one of the Tor players who was just asking for the sign back.

Even worse, it was done in front of the Crosby head coach, who looked to be more concerned about doing his postgame interview than he was disciplining his player.

As a fellow high school coach myself, it is, no doubt, our duty to teach our student-athletes the do’s and don’ts of our respective sports — on and off the playing field alike.

But, most importantly, it’s about teaching them the do’s and don’ts of life.

So whether it’s just one player at fault or the entire team, displaying a lack of sportsmanship falls on the shoulders of the coaches, administrators and parents of the player(s) involved.

But not once was that player told to stop egging it on.

In fact, it looked to be more encouraged than anything else, as unmentionable “go home” remarks were directed towards the Ball High supporters from some of the Crosby fans.

If this is how a team is going to react after winning, God forbid how they will react if and, no ill-will intended, when they do lose.

I was proud of the Ball High players, coaches and fans for walking away without further incident, which I know was a hard thing to do, especially after all that was said and done.

This is certainly something the University Interscholastic League should be told about, and hopefully proper steps will be taken by the Ball High brass to prevent this from ever happening again.

You always want to win with class; equally you always want to lose with class, too.

Unfortunately those that don’t follow that golden rule will learn the hard way, because karma truly has a funny way of coming back and biting you in the butt.”
