CUBS/COUGARS PREPARE FOR REGION SEMIFINAL

The Brenham Cubs’ next step in their quest for a state baseball championship will take them to Crosby, Thursday night for the opener of the Region III/5A Semifinals.

The Cubs (24-8) will take on the Crosby Cougars (27-4) in a best two-of-three series, for a berth in the Region Championship round.

The Cubs earned a berth in the semifinals with a two-game sweep over Leander Rouse (3-0 & 9-3) while the Cougars took three games to move past Galveston Ball (3-2, 1-3 & 4-1).

The Cubs enter the series with a strong trio of starting pitchers, featuring: Chandler Jozwiak (9-1, 0.78 era, 95 k); Dane Acker (5-0, 0.00 era, 37k) and Eric Wellmann (6-2, 1.62 era, 47 k).  The Cubs as a staff have a 2.03 era with a WHIP (Walks + hits to innings pitched) of 1.12.

The Cougars’ staff is led by senior Daniel Nelson (7-1, 0.49 era, 65k); senior Triston Sherer (3-1, 1.48 era, 29 k); senior Byron McCoy (3-0, 0.76 era, 28 k) and junior Blake Kuritz (4-0, 3.39 era, 35k).

The Cubs enter the series with a team batting average of .309, with five regulars hitting over .300: Darvis Watson (.452, 24 runs, 13 rbi, .588 obp); Zach Marshall (.422, 18 runs, 34 rbi, 11 2b, 3 hr, .504 obp); Jozwiak (.383, 18 runs, 19 rbi, 10 2b, 2 hr, .480 obp); Pierce Weiss (.337, 19 rbi, 7 2b, .468 obp); and Acker (.327, 20 runs, 20 rbi, 5 2b, 3 hr, .422 obp).

Crosby is hitting .302 as a team, led by McCoy (.444, 15 runs, 11 rbi, .559 obp); sophomore Ethan Aloma (.400, 21 runs, 15 rbi, .514 obp); Daniel Balderrama (.355, 25 runs, 20 rbi, .490 obp) and Jacob Bell (.317, 18 runs, 16 rbi, .469 obp).

Game one is set for Crosby, Thursday night at 6:30.  Game-two will be Friday evening at 6:30 at Firemen’s Park in Brenham.  If game-three is necessary, it will follow game-two by 30 minutes.

The winner of the series will advance to face the winner of the Tomball/Port Neches-Groves series.  That best-of-three is set for Friday night and Saturday afternoon at Crosby.
