DETAILS RELEASED ABOUT BRYAN POLICE INVOLVED SHOOTING

Bryan Police Chief Eric Buske held a press conference Monday, releasing more details about the officer-involved shooting of an unarmed man.

27-year-old Steven Laughlin is on administrative leave after shooting a man who reportedly made threatening movements and remarks to Laughlin and another officer.

Buske said the officers were sent to a home on Mallard Drive after receiving a call about a disturbance involving a woman and her ex-boyfriend.

Buske says they received two separate calls about the disturbance- one from the mother of the involved woman and the other from the woman herself. The woman explained the man was not supposed to be there and he had been arrested previously and a protection order had recently expired.

While the officers were speaking to the woman, the man showed up and became aggressive with police.

Officer Laughlin casually approached the man and attempted to interact with him. The man placed his right hand in his back right pocket and refused to remove it despite multiple commands from officers to do so.

Buske says the man made multiple statements such as “are you ready” and “I ain’t dropping nothing”. The man moved in the direction of the woman and kept asking Officer Laughlin if he “was ready”.

Officer Laughlin told him “don’t do this” and the male responded “do it man”. The man then rapidly pulled out a black object from his back pocket, took a shooting stance, and pointed it at the officer. Officer Laughlin fired his handgun several times striking the man.

The black object turned out to be a cell phone.

The man was taken to a hospital where his condition continues to improve. Since the man is not charged with a crime at this time, Police are not releasing his name or criminal history.

The Bryan Police Department has initiated two investigations into the incident. The criminal case is currently being investigated by members of the Criminal Investigation Division and an internal affairs investigation is being conducted by members of the Professional Standards Division.

Additionally, the Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers are conducting a parallel investigation.
