DPS ISSUES REPORT ON GANG ACTIVITY

A report from the Department of Public Safety says organized crime continues to be a significant threat to public safety in Texas as a whole.

There are as many as 100,000 gang members in Texas and 20 different gangs. The report separated the gangs into tiers. Tier one, the most significant in the state, names the Tango Blast, Latin Kings, Texas Mexican Mafia, and MS-13.

The 60 page report says gang activity in most counties in the Brazos Valley is near the state median.

The report cited the most organized crime activity occurs in Brazos and Montgomery counties.

It reports median gang activities in Washington, Grimes, Lee, Fayette and Waller counties.

The gang activities are considered low threats in Burleson and Austin counties.

DPS says the Latin Kings is one of the most active gangs in the Brazos Valley. The major concern with the Latin Kings is their direct connection to the Chicago-based group that provides resources not afforded to most other Texas gangs.
