CUBETTES EARN PLAYOFF BERTH WITH 5-SET ROAD WIN

For the third straight match, the Brenham Cubette volleyball team faced what amounted to a playoff game—and for the third straight time, the Cubettes came through with flying colors.

Brenham (27-16/9-5) rallied for a five-set victory at Magnolia West, Tuesday night, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12, earning a berth in the Region III/5A playoffs.

With the Cubettes down two sets to one, they first rallied to take the fourth set with a strong finish, scoring 10 of the game’s final 14 points.

But the biggest rally was saved for the fifth-and-deciding set.  With Magnolia West (24-13/9-5) leading, 12-9 in a sprint to 15 points, Brenham ran off six-straight points to take the match, and a spot in the post-season.

The rally was spearheaded by sophomore setter Kelly Jurden, who served all six winning points.  The game-winning run also featured key kills by hitters Ashley Homan and Hadley Webb, with several key defensive plays from Avery Schroeder, Jordyn Williams, Gretchen West, Kenna Mikolajczak and Keauna Bimage.

“It was a great team effort,” said Cubettes Head Coach Debbie Yeager.  “I’m so proud of all of those girls.  They played their hearts out.”

“We served so well tonight.  They (Magnolia West) weren’t able to set up a lot things they usually do because of our serves.”

It wasn’t until after the game, that the Cubettes were informed by Magnolia ISD Athletic Director Ray Kenjura, that a four-team tie-breaker would not be necessary due to a district rule that goes to head-to-head competition for such an occurrence.

In head-to-head play between the four tied teams, the Cubettes were 3-3 with a win over Stratford and two over Magnolia West.  Magnolia was 4-2, Stratford was 3-3, and Magnolia West was 2-4.  Brenham, Stratford and Magnolia advance to the Bi-District playoffs, while Magnolia West is the odd team out.

“Unbelievable,” said Yeager.  “We get to play more volleyball…this is awesome!”

Helping lead the way were: Ashley Homan with 20 kills and 15 digs; Hadley Webb with 17 kills, 21 digs and three aces; Jordyn Williams with six kills and four blocks; Kenna Mikolajczak with six kills; Avery Schroeder with 23 digs; Kelly Jurden with 25 assists and five aces; and, Kaci Pecht with 15 assists.

The Cubettes will now get together with Stratford and Magnolia to determine playoff seedings—then meet with the playoff teams from District 20/5A (all in Houston) to decide the Bi-District playoff dates, times and locations.

KWHI and www.kwhi.com will have live coverage of the Cubettes’ playoff games.
