ELDERLY PILOT AND WIFE ESCAPE FIERY CRASH LANDING IN FAYETTE COUNTY

  

An elderly couple escaped from the fiery crash landing of their small aircraft Tuesday afternoon near the Fayette County Regional Airport.

Reports from the Fayette County Sheriff’s office say that an 81-year old pilot, traveling from St. Petersburg Florida to Fredericksburg made an emergency landing at about 3:30pm Tuesday.  Lt. David Beyer said he overshot the runway, because a fire broke out in the plane.

The pilot reported that his plane was on fire and then lost radio contact.  Emergency responders from the Sheriff’s Office, the Fayette County EMS, La Grange Fire Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety all rushed to the scene.

The aircraft, a small fixed wing single engine, failed to make the runway and was found in a swampy area near old Lockhart Road.

The incident remains under investigation.
