Sidney Dell Johnston Remmert left Blinn College more than $2 million

The estate of Sidney Dell Johnston Remmert, a former Blinn College graduate, recently gifted the Blinn College Foundation $1 million to endow scholarships for Austin County students.

“Sidney Remmert, through her generous bequest, has made it possible for numerous students in Austin County to get a college education,” said Sam Sommer, Blinn Foundation Chair. “This legacy gift will impact generations of students from this area. We are so thankful to Ms. Remmert for making a difference in the lives of our youth.”

The $1 million donation is one of multiple installments that will come from the estate.

Remmert was a graduate of Sealy High School and attended Blinn College from 1957 to 1959. At Blinn, she was a member of the Blinn College Buccaneer Band, assisted in the library, and worked part-time in the administration office.

She transferred to Sam Houston State Teachers College and graduated with a degree in library science. After years working as a high school librarian, she and her husband worked on their ranch and managed a livestock operation located between Sealy and Wallis.

“She wanted to be remembered as someone who was reaching out and helping young people who live in Austin County attain their educational goals at Blinn College, especially in agriculture,” said Carol Wenzel, close friend and executor of the estate. “Blinn College was dear and precious to her heart, and her very generous gift is a reflection of that.”

The gift will be placed in a permanent endowment to establish scholarships for students from Austin County, with a preference for students who intend to pursue careers in agriculture. Students can begin applying for all Blinn scholarships on Thursday, Feb. 1, by visiting www.blinn.edu/finaid/scholar.html. Approximately 200 scholarships are available for the Fall 2018 semester.

“She loved the education process and always talked about the importance of a good education,” Wenzel said. “I hope, as Sidney Dell Johnston Remmert would, for the continued success of Blinn College in the years ahead.”

The Blinn Foundation supports programs and activities that enhance the quality of education for Blinn College students and expand the educational opportunities for the entire community. While raising funds is an important function, the Foundation also seeks to heighten community awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the College and to promote excellence in education.
