FAYETTE CO. SHERIFF WARNS OF ‘PHONE SCAMS’

The Fayette Co. Sheriff is warning citizens to be wary of phone scams.

Sherrif Keith Korenek says they are receiving reports of attempted phone scams occurring daily.

Korenek says the callers are telling the intended victims everything from, winning a lottery or other prize, inheriting money, but a fee must be paid, or a family friend or family member is in trouble and needs money.

Many times the scammers ask their victims to wire them money or get a money card and relay the card number.  Korenek says that wiring money or cash cards is like sending cash—the sender cannot get the money back.

The Sheriff urges all citizens who receives such calls to “stop and think before sending money for an emergency.”  If another person or family member’s name is mentioned, “call that person or relative.”

Korenek reminds everyone to, “Always check out any scam, too good to be true, or where the caller is rushing you to send money.”

Report any suspected scam to local law enforcement or to the Federal Trade Commission at: 877-382-4357.  You may also go online to: ftc.gov/complaint.
