FEMA OFFICIALS: LOOK OUT FOR SCAMS

Officials with FEMA are warning Brazos Valley residents that are registering for government assistance, to be wary of possible scam artists.

A FEMA spokesperson is reminding residents and business owners to register online for assistance, and that FEMA does not charge for any work.

Robin Smith tells KBTX-TV, if anyone calls and says they’re from FEMA, if you pay 'X' amount of dollars they’ll help, report it to the local authorities immediately.

Smith also say it's important to take photographs of property, and keep record of every step of the clean-up process.

But most importantly, to get FEMA assistance, you must register -- either online or call 1 (800) 621-3362.

There will also be FEMA specialists going door to door in hard hit areas to help people register, however Smith says don't wait for someone to come knocking.
