FORMER A&M DEPUTY CHANCELLOR CRITICALLY INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT

Jay Kimbrough, who had a stormy tenure as the Deputy Chancellor at Texas A&M was critically injured Friday evening when he crashed his motorcycle just north of Navasota in Grimes County.

Reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety say Kimbrough was riding his bike at state highway 6 and FM 2988, when he ran off the road. Kimbrough had to be airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan, where he was last listed in critical condition.

Kimbrough was Deputy Chancellor of the Texas A&M System in September of 2011 when his position was eliminated, and he lost his job.  When A&M security officers attempted to remove him from his office, he reportedly pulled a knife on them.  Kimbrough eventually left the office.

Kimbrough has been the Director of Homeland Security at Texas Department of Public Safety.

Kimbrough is no stranger to both danger and controversy.  He became the County Judge in Bee County, in south Texas in 1991, after his predecessor, Bob Walk was convicted of official misconduct.  He fought off several attempts to remove him  from office.  He made an unsuccessful run for Congress the next year.

Kimbrough was wounded when he was a Marine Corps helicopter pilot in Viet Nam.  His helicopter was shot down in March of 1967, and he received the Purple Heart.
