GEORGETOWN JUMPS OUT TO ONE-GAME LEAD OVER CUBS

Defensive miscues cost the Brenham Cubs Thursday night as Georgetown downed the Cubs, 5-4 in the opener of the Bi-District playoff series.

The Eagles (26-7) jumped out to a three-run lead after a pair of Cubs errors led to three unearned runs.

The Cubs (20-12) countered with a run in the second, as Garrison Weiss drove home Jake Olson with an rbi-single.

Trailing 5-1 in the sixth, the Cubs rallied for a pair of runs, as Carson Draehn scored from third on a double play.  Chris Kubeczka then drove home Eric Wellmann with a single, cutting the lead to 5-3.

Brenham would draw closer in the top of the seventh as Pierce Weiss singled with one out, followed two batters later by an rbi-double by Wellmann.  However, Wellmann would be stranded at second with the game tying run.

Wellmann went the distance and took the tough loss, as he gave up just one earned run on only four hits.

The Cubs will have to sweep a doubleheader, Saturday if they hope to continue the 2018 season.

Game-2 gets underway at 1:00 at Leroy Dreyer Field at Blinn College.  Game-3, if necessary, will follow about a half hour later.
