GOODWILL BAPTIST CHURCH PLANS TO REBUILD

Goodwill Baptist smallOne of the victims of the historic May flooding was the Goodwill Baptist Church located at 15050 FM 1155 East in north-east Washington County. The church building was a total loss after the flood waters rose inside to over 4 feet. The adjacent cafeteria building was moved over 10 feet from its foundation. Church deacon Tommie Sullivan says that the only thing that could be salvaged from the church were the steeple and a few ceiling fans and folding chairs.

Sullivan explains that the church was founded in 1865, and has always been a part of the Goodwill community:

Currently, the church is meeting in members’ homes, but the plan is to rebuild. Sullivan says they plan is to relocate to a new site, but still within the Goodwill community. He explains part of what the church means to that community:

Rebuilding the church is expected to cost $500,000. The church was insured, but not against flood, since it had never flooded in its 150 year history. They have applied with FEMA and are still waiting to hear if a grant will be approved. Accounts have been set up at Brenham National Bank, Bank of Brenham, and Wells Fargo Bank to receive donations for rebuilding the church. A Go Fund Me account has also been set up at https://www.gofundme.com/2ag3rqms   All photos courtesy of Goodwill Baptist Church / Tommie Sullivan.

What a long history this church has had in this community. I’m glad they were able to salvage the steeple. I know they have had a difficult job clearing debris in this heat. Hopefully many people giving even small donations, including mine, will be enough to start their rebuilding.

    1. These members have worked tirelessly for months in the heat to demo this beautiful, historic church. Please consider helping them out with monetary donations so that they can re-build this cornerstone of our community.
