GRIMES CO. RESIDENTS VOICE OPPOSITION TO “AGGIE HIGHWAY”

A number of Grimes County residents turned out Thursday night to voice their opposition to an extension of Highway 249 from Houston to the Brazos Valley.

TxDOT hosted a public hearing Thursday evening in Navasota about the proposed "Aggie Highway", a project that has been in the development stages since 2013.

Many who attended the meeting voiced their opposition to the state's plan to expand 249 from FM 1774 in Pinehurst to Highway 105 east of Navasota.

Most of those in attendance said they don't want the road, but a handful of citizens did say the new route means less congestion for Houston area commuters.

TxDOT says the routes they displayed are the department's preferred options, but subject to change based on public feedback.

The project is expected to cost anywhere from $175 to $200 million.

For those who could not attend last (Thursday) night’s meeting, TxDOT says residents have ten days to submit feedback in written form.

  1. If it affected your property and way of life adversley would you feel the same?

    1. Deciding the meaning of the above comment requires some assumptions because so little information was given. I am not sure if the comment was directed at the property owners who would be affected by the new road or if it is directed at the people who would be using the road. Either way, most people who support a project like this acknowledge that people along the proposed route will likely face an affect from this highway. However, at some point the safety of the general public and the economic opportunity to continue to grow are region have to also be considered. Forcing people to continue to use the already overcrowded 290 corridor is a danger to the general public. It should also be pointed out that a more direct route into BCS that is shorter to drive means less fuel is consumed which is better for our environment. I am not a fan of eminent domain, however there are times when it is appropriate and this seems to be one of them.

  2. Here in Cypress, we started hearing about the Aggie Highway/Freeway about the time FM 149 grew to State Hwy 249 and one of our children was planning to go to A&M.

    THAT WAS IN 1990 !

Don’t know where that 2013 date comes from.

  3. As a resident of Washington county who travels through Hempstead/Waller county often, this project makes a lot of sense. The 290 to highway 6 route is becoming much too congestive on high traffic days to the point it is becoming unsafe. Another corridor into BCS needs to be added in order to safely move people from Houston into BCS.
