GRIMES CO. SCHOOL CONSIDER ARMING TEACHERS

Two Grimes County school districts say they are working on plans to arm some of their teachers and staff.

The Navasota ISD and Anderson-Shiro CISD are examining possible implementation of the plan.

Officials say the armed staff would be able to intervene if there were an active shooter or other life threatening attack situation.

So far, officials say the plan has generated mixed reactions.

Some are saying teachers have too many responsibilities and shouldn't have to have weapons in their classrooms, while others say the plan could help in such a desperate situation.

Navasota ISD Superintendent Dr. Stu Musick says their board this week approved specific personnel to begin the process and begin the training to implement the program by August.

Musick says most of the feedback they received from parents was supportive.

He says the staff participating will have to undergo extensive and continual training for their guns and also have to have a psychological evaluation.

Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell says his office is working with local school districts including Anderson-Shiro on their plans.

Navasota ISD officials say they hope to have people armed on every campus.
