GRIMES CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING IN RICHARDS

Grimes County authorities have released additional information on a shooting case in Richards Sunday night.

According to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch received a 911 call from 17-year-old Raul Garcia Jr. around 5:30 p.m., informing them that his friend had been shot.  The gunshot victim is a 16-year-old male.

Investigators determined Garcia and the 16-year-old were riding around in the Richards Community, where they acquired two pistols.  After this transaction, they began a “challenge”, known on social media as “You Lackin.’”  In this game, one person points a gun at the other and asks, “You Lackin”?  The other person responds by pulling their gun out and pointing it back.

Garcia’s gun fired while pointed at the victim, striking him in the face.  Garcia then threw the pistols out of the vehicle and dialed 911.  He told dispatch he was taking the victim to a Huntsville hospital, where the Walker County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Highway Patrol made contact and detained Garcia.

Grimes County Sheriff’s Investigators, along with Texas Parks and Wildlife K9 Units, conducted a search this (Tuesday) morning of the roadside along FM 149, near the Grimes/Montgomery County Line.  The firearm used was recovered, along with other evidence.  Investigators say the teens obtained the pistols after trading marijuana, and are looking into who gave the teens the guns.

The victim is in stable condition.  Garcia is in the Grimes County Jail, facing charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.  This is a second-degree felony, punishable by 2 to 20 years of confinement, and fines up to $10,000.  Garcia was released on $3,000 bond.
