GRIMES COUNTY D.A.R. IDENTIFYING WWI VETERANS

Work continues in Grimes County to identify veterans of World War I for a monument the Robert Raines Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution chapter plans to erect at Historic Anderson Park.

Officials say information from veteran’s families and working with available resources is key to successfully identifying Grimes County’s veterans.

According to Chapter Regent Kathy Wells, “Finalizing the design of the memorial has been a challenge because ongoing research indicates about 600 Grimes County soldiers served in World War I, which is far more than original estimates.”

Wells says the plan is to include the names of all World War I soldiers who were honorably discharged.

More than $4,000 has been donated by the Grimes County community to the Robert Raines Chapter NSDAR toward the memorial fundraiser since April 19.  April 19 marked the centennial of America’s entrance into WW I.
