Former Brenham Cub pitcher Jason Gurka is one step closer to the big leagues.

Gurka, a left-handed pitcher in the Colorado Rockies’ organization, has been called up to the team’s AAA affiliate, the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Gurka, a 2006 graduate of Brenham High School, got the word Monday that he would be moving up from New Britian, where he began the 2015 season.

Gurka is 3-0 for the Rock Cats, with a 2.31 earned run average in 14 relief appearances.  He has 20 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched and a WHIP (Walks & hits/innings pitched) of 0.986.

Gurka was a 2008 draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles after two successful seasons at Angelina College.  He signed with the Rockies as a free agent during this past off season.

Gurka is a native of Chappell Hill.  He is one of five former Cubs currently playing professional baseball.
