HEAVY TURNOUT ON LAST DAY TO VOTE EARLY

Washington County Clerk Beth Rothermel says the last day of early voting was especially busy.  She says it was amazing all week and, in the end, 1314 Republicans cast early ballots and 84 Democratic votes were cast.

Now voters wanting to cast ballots will need to wait for Election Day, Tuesday.  Rothermel says the place where you normally vote may have changed for this election and to double check the location.

Rothemel says again, you can still vote in the runoff if you did not vote in the March fourth primary, but if you did you cannot switch parties.

She also reminds voters that the Voter ID law is in effect and you need to provide the election judge an officially recognized photo identification.  This could be a driver’s license, a state identification card, a certificate of citizenship or even a concealed handgun license.

There is one contested race on the Washington County Republican runoff.  The race for precinct four Justice of the Peace has businesswoman Robin Luedtke up against attorney Bill Kendall.

There are hotly contested races statewide for the Republicans as well.  Incumbent Lt. Governor David Dewhurst is up against challenger State Senator Dan Patrick in a bitterly fought election battle.

Ken Paxton and Dan Branch are vying for the Republican nomination for Attorney General.

The Democrats are keeping a special eye on the nomination for U.S. Senator to face incumbent Republican John Cornyn.  State Party leaders are concerned that Kesha Rogers, a Lyndon LaRouche supporter could be the nominee, instead of the party favorite David Alameel.  The Democrats have another runoff for agriculture commissioner, as country music performer and author Kinky Friedman is up against Jim Hogan for that nomination.

Election day is Tuesday, May 27th with the polls open from 7am to 7pm.
