HPD narcotics unit to discuss techniques at special presentation

Blinn College’s Criminal Justice Program hosts April 6 lecture

Representatives from the Houston Police Department Proactive Narcotics Unit will discuss the latest developments and techniques they use to counter the threat of illegal narcotics-related violence and crime during a special presentation on the Blinn College-Brenham campus.

The session will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, in the Student Center Conference Room (map), and is open to students and the public, though photographs of the officers is prohibited.

“This presentation is designed to provide real-world experience for our students,” said James Torres, criminal justice instructor. “Some of our students could be employed in these positions within the next year, immediately after their graduation.”

With tracks designed for the traditional classroom or online, Blinn’s Criminal Justice Program offers Associate of Arts, Associate of Applied Science and Law Enforcement Technology degrees in criminal justice, as well as a Criminal Justice Corrections certificate. Blinn also offers a Basic Peace Officer Academy certificate through its partnership with the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service Central Texas Police Academy.

Students who complete the program are eligible for a variety of local, state and federal careers, including law enforcement, investigation, corrections operation, corrections counseling, a variety of court positions, government administration and probation. Similar careers are also available through private companies.

Prospective students considering a career in law enforcement can learn more about the program at upcoming information sessions. The sessions take place at 5 and 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the Blinn–Brenham campus Student Center Conference Room, and at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in Room 135 of the Blinn–Bryan campus Science Building.
