HWY. 36 LANES TO OPEN WEDNESDAY

The northbound lanes of State Highway 36 will be opening on Wednesday.

The Texas Department of Transportation has announced that Angel Brothers Construction is in the final phase of construction the $14-million project to widen the existing two lanes of traffic to a four lane divided highway.

Senator Lois Kolkhorst, a member of the Senate Transportation Committee, lauded the announcement, saying she recently met with our local TxDOT officials, and they have delivered an important new roadway that should improve public safety and traffic flow.

Police officers will be on hand to assist with traffic control during the traffic switch.   Drivers are reminded to obey all traffic warning signs and use caution when travelling through the construction zone.

Once traffic is switched to its final configuration, Angel Brothers will reconstruct part of the concrete median barrier north of US 290, finish the main lane paving on the south end of the project and reconstruct the frontage road near Premier Metal Buyers.  Construction is projected to be complete by the end of June.

  1. Thanks 3reds for great questions taxpayers need the answers to. Personally I have always thought the entire project was pushed by deep pockets in Scenic estates. Without this “change” travel times by EMS, etc for this subdivision had to travel thru town or into town, then to 577 intersect with 36 to access the loop. All about their dangerous Uturns in front of ongoing traffic on the old configuration. It certainly was inconvenient, but a lousy solution. The light at 36 north backs up traffic for as much as 3/4 of a mile some times if trucks are involved.

  2. The neighborhood crossover, actually the whole project, puzzles me….the road was widened and the interchange at 36 and North Park was rebuilt for safety concerns because people were making illegal u-turns and such, yet now we’re allowing for them to crossover the highway to get in and out of the neighborhood. And I agree, why is one side pavement and one side asphalt? Did the state run out of money for this project? The state probably wouldn’t be able to get away with something like that in Harris or Travis county. And what’s up with making 36 North one right turn lane and only one through lane at North Park? How will that facilitate traffic flow any quicker.? As for an overpass over the city of Brenham? The entire city? Terrible idea. That would kill commerce completely.

    1. Overpasses don’t kill cities, the commerce just moves to the overpass, which is why Four Corners is the way it is today. Ever think about why it’s called ‘Four Corners’? Ever wonder why we got the original overpass? Try to imagine downtown Brenham with modern 290 flowing through it.

  3. The project scope was determined by TXDOT, evidently the powers that be in Washington county pushed for it to be over-ridden and completed as the project surpassed its deadline of January of 2018. It is amazing that they decided to just abandon the project and slap something down, especially with the addition of the subdivision intersection.

There should be an overpass over Brenham. If they are not going to open the roads up to facilitate transportation efficiencies; they will be fighting superfluous additions forever. They need to take a hard look now and come up with a Master Plan for the city. The area could flourish if a little more time was spent on planning and less time spent on politicking.

  4. Thank you TxDot and Senator Kolkhorst for getting this done! I use this intersection often and have been waiting for it to open for months.

  5. Was just wondering why one side of the new road is asphalt and the other side is concrete? Did the project run out of money or was there some other reason?

    Curious.
