INTERNS APPROVED BY COMMISSIONERS FOR SHERIFF AND JP OFFICE

Interns topped the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting of the Washington County Commissioners Court.

The commissioners approved the placement of two interns, one for the County Sheriff’s Office and for the Precinct-3 Justice of the Peace Office.

The interns run all aspects of the Sheriff’s and JP’s office. They are required to work 240 hours through Blinn College, and most are working to become paralegal.

Sheriff Otto Hanak told the commissioners that the intern program has been very successful in the past, and thanked the commissioners for approving the new interns.

Commissioners discussed extending the current contract for the county’s towing service rotation log.  The move would continue the current agreement with the towing companies for abandoned, impounded, junked and disabled vehicles.

The current contract has been extended from May 31st to December 31st to give the county attorney time to review the contract extension.  The new contract, if approved, would start the new contract January 1st, 2016.

The county is currently paying $500.00 a year for the contracts. The extension until the end of the year will be $250.00.

The commissioners were concerned that there were not enough “teeth” in the current contract to counteract what they consider bad behavior with the towing services. The companies are allowed to be disciplined six times, and the commissioners believe that they should be not allowed that. It is hoped that with this new contract, the behavior can be counteracted.

Also approved was an Interlocal Participation agreement between Washington County and the Texas Association of Counties Health and Employee Benefits Pool for the County’s participation in the Pooled Health and Employee Benefits Plan.

The commissioners also heard monthly reports from the Sheriff’s Office, EMS and Veterans’ Service Office.
