INVESTIGATION REVEALS CAUSE OF NAVASOTA TRAIN DERAILMENT

Investigators with Union Pacific Railroad say they have determined that a Grimes County train derailment last month was caused by a broken rail.

Elizabeth Hutchison, spokeswoman for Union Pacific, says the information will be used in the company’s ongoing derailment prevention efforts.

Eight rail cars hauling hazardous chemicals derailed on June 24, shutting down State Highway 6 in both directions for more than six hours.

The outside lane of the Texas 6 overpass just south of Navasota is expected to be closed for several weeks as crews repair a damaged bridge beam.

No one was injured in the accident.
