IOLA FD EMBEZZLEMENT CASE BEING SETTLED

After a two-year investigation, the Iola Fire Department will be getting a portion of the estimated $40,000 that was allegedly embezzled from the department by the fire officials.

Forty-one year old Samantha Kmich of Iola made a plea deal with Grimes County prosecutors last week in which she agreed to 10 years deferred adjudication that includes restitution of some of the embezzled funds.  Kimich was ordered to repay $8,5 52 in the money she admitted stealing and needed to pay another $333 in court costs.

Kimich and her brother and former fire chief Earl Edward Sword Jr., along with his mother 71-year old Wanda Richardson Sword, were each previously charged with second degree felony theft by a public servant greater than $20,000 but less than $100,000 in March of 2010 and February of 2012.
