KAYAKER AND FISHERMEN FOUND DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO SPILLWAY

Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak had to remind three men Tuesday, that lack of common sense could cost them their lives.

According to Hanak, he was surveying the situation near Lake Somerville Tuesday afternoon, when a 9-1-1 call came in that someone was kayaking dangerously close to the spillway.

When he arrived at the scene, he spotted the kayaker less than a hundred feet from the spillway, which was pouring approximately 9200 cubic feet of water per second at the time.

Hanak says there were also two fishermen in waist-high water, also very close to the spillway.

Hanak says the three left the water voluntarily and were not arrested or charged.

The Sheriff went on to say that many people seemed to have, “lost sight of the sheer power of water”, and seem to lack “common sense.”
