Kelvin Raven has filed to serve as a trustee on the Brenham Independent School Board. Raven, a sergeant  with the Brenham Police Department, filed for Position 4, which is currently held by Dr. Donald Draehn.

"I've been with the police department for 18 years - 14 as a School Resource Officer. Those years definitely gave me some insight on what teachers, faculty, staff and students face to succeed. I want all of our BISD personnel to feel valued - they are the backbone of the district. If they feel valued and are given the right tools and training to do the job, they will become better educators. That in turn ensures our children will be better students and more successful in their school careers. That is the return on the investment for which this community is looking," Raven said.

Raven holds a Master Peace Officer Certification and was promoted to sergeant in 2012.

"Promoting up is why I left the schools. I truly enjoyed my work as an SRO. Watching students cross the stage, starting a new chapter in their lives as productive citizens - I loved the final outcome and being part of it. I see young people I mentored who are happy and starting successful careers and lives and I'm proud of that. They have come back to me and said I helped - I was firm but fair. That's important," he said.

Raven was born in Brenham but raised in Houston. He moved back in 1996. He and his wife are the parents of two children, 12 and 4. Raven is a steward at St. John AME Church here.

"I'm looking forward to being a member of the BISD board and making a difference for personnel and students alike. I hope everyone comes out to vote - that's how they make a difference."
