Two bills authored and sponsored by State Senator Lois Kolkhorst were signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, before the special session ended, Tuesday.

Abbott signed into law Senate Bill 17 and House Bill 7, which represents twenty percent of the items passed during the special session.

To address the rising number of pregnancy-related deaths in Texas, Kolkhorst authored and passed Senate Bill 17. The legislation will extend the state's Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force and implement other policies to improve maternal health across Texas.

Kolkhorst says, "Texas must remain vigilant in our effort to protect the health and safety of women.  Texas will now be able to directly address the top causes of pregnancy-related deaths and improve maternal health outcomes in our state."

To address a growing trend in land-use restrictions, Senator Kolkhorst sponsored House Bill 7 which significantly curtails a city's ability to impose fees for the removal of trees on private property.

Kolkhorst says, "Some property owners who wish to remove a tree on their own land are compelled to pay a city a fee, implying that the city owns the tree.  This bill reigns in aggressive local ordinances that restrict the right to own trees on private property."

  1. So what’s really being said here is our Senator supported the Governors and Lt Governors agenda! Otherwise these two bills would not have made it to the special session! The Governor himself said he was taking names of republicans that are not supporting his agenda.
How can our state government officials wait to the last minute to pass a education bill? These are kids futures that being bartered over like a item at a flea market!
    Typical politics! SHM…
I’ll be doing a lot of thinking before the next election!

  2. Wow, I’m so impressed our representatives were able to ignore all the divisive social issues and get something accomplished on the REAL problems facing this nation; spending more money on solving a problem whose cause we already know, and making sure Gov. Abbot’s next venture into home improvement isn’t so costly. And by the way, I thought there were twenty issues to attend to during the special session..? 20/2=10, not 20, so 10%, not 20%, although it’s not like even 20% is something to be proud of. Now the legislature can go on vacation until 2019, yay!
