KOLKHOST TO PUSH “MATERNAL MORTALITY” BILL IN SPECIAL SESSION

Local State Senator Lois Kolkhorst says maternal mortality will be one of her top concerns when the State Legislature convenes in special session.

Kolkhorst says she and three state representatives will file legislation to extend the maternal mortality task force.

According to the Texas Department of Health Services, the rate of maternal mortality in Texas is disproportionally high, compared to other countries.

Kolkhorst says Texas must do more to address those numbers and combat those statistics.

Governor Greg Abbott says he’s grateful to Kolkhorst and Representatives Cindy Burkett, Shawn Thierry and Armando Walle for championing the cause in the legislature.

Burkett says she’s confident she and Kolkhorst will send legislation to Abbott’s desk, extending the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force, ensuring post-partum depression screening and treatment for more women by competing for federal grants.

The special legislative session is slated to begin July 18.
