KTEX 106 CELEBRATING 25 YEARS ON AIR

On this day 25 years ago, KTEX 106 signed on to the air for the very first time.

The road to creating the station started in 1985, when KWHI FM applied with the FCC to upgrade from 3000 watts to 50,000 watts and to change the frequency to 106.1.

The application was objected to by a group from Georgetown that was planning on creating a station near Austin. The multi-year battle concluded with the KTEX tower being located near Lyons with a directional antenna.

Construction of KTEX 106 was a major investment by Tom S. Whitehead Inc.  It included not only the new tower site and transmitter, but new studios in Brenham, microwave links to the tower, offices in Bryan, and a new broadcast vehicle- the KTEX Hot Country Cruiser.

Construction at the new tower site was hampered by heavy rains in late 1991 and early 1992.  Moving heavy machinery on the site became impossible, so the concrete for the tower had to be pumped through pipes to the tower guy wire anchors.

However, even with the rain delays, KTEX was able to begin broadcasting on Texas Independence Day, 1992.

On that day, the DJs included Madison Chase in Mornings, Shotgun Michaels in Middays, Dancin’ Dave Williams in Afternoons, Maverick Mike in Evenings, and Craig Miller on Overnights.  The Sports Doc, Ed Pothul, provided news and sports in the mornings and afternoons.

Since then KTEX 106 has flourished, providing 25 years of contemporary country music to the Brazos Valley.

In celebration, KTEX will be marking the special occasion with a series of events and giveaways.

The festivities will kick off today with Blake in the Country Café. From 11:48 a.m. to 12:48 p.m. KTEX will be playing the Top 25 country hits from the week of March 2, 1992.

KTEX is also giving away tickets to see Aaron Watson at Rodeo Houston 2017 on March 7th all day today.

Listen to hear Aaron Watson wish KTEX 106 a “Happy 25th Birthday”- which will happen once and hour, every hour. Be caller number 12 and you will win the pair of tickets.

It’s just one of the ways KTEX 106 will be celebrating 25 years and thanking the Brazos Valley community for their continued support.
