LAND DRILLING PROPOSAL INCLUDES PARTS OF LAKE SOMERVILLE

Six spots of land at Lake Somerville - Brenham’s water source - are being included in a lease proposal from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is taking bids on oil and gas leases for 36,000 acres of federally owned land. Oil and gas companies would be allowed to extract petroleum reserves that could potentially pollute ground water as well as surface water.

Four of the parts of land are located on the Washington County side of Lake Somerville.

  1. No KA, information from long term, experienced, knowledgeable, successful, oil producer. Sorry if you or yours must depend on the oil industry for resources. From your point of view, I guess it would be good to bring asbestos back into production and related industries.

  2. True, drilling and wells are numerous for forty plus years now. And during those early years, before EPA regulations were in place, the harmful chemical drilling muds washed thru the tributaries and creeks into Lake Somerville. And we get to drink that water. Now, fracking is proposed for this area to increase the pollution. IF fracking is done correctly, it can be possible to not pollute drinking water. BUT, done correctly, it is a very expensive process. The supervision and inspection process for monitoring the process has proven to be UNSUCCESSFUL, and the results are polluted drinking waters. SENATOR MICHAEL MCCAUL can stop this, contact his local office immediately. This is an election year and he counts on the ONE BOX checkers on the ballot.

  3. To all. You already have wells there. Some are 50 foot from the lake it’s self you now just being against it. The last one in burton part 4 years ago. Ride around and look. I pipe the gas buster in.

  4. This is the same place where we get drinking water for the residents of Brenham. Water is bad enough, lets not make it worse.

  5. The “proponents of fracking” have actual facts to show fracking does not do what those that oppose fracking says it does. All they have are scar tactics.

  6. Get right with God people! God already put a bunch of wells around Lake Somerville! Just look at Google satellite!

    1. Brian, what are you saying, that to not drill for oil and gas around the lake would be getting right with God ? Do a study of the formation, depth, and direction of the existing wells compared to the future wells.

      1. You got the spare $20 per research-hour it costs to get that info out of the RRC’s archives? There are already plenty of wells all around the lake; my beef is why is BLM shopping this at a historic low in oil prices?!

  7. This proposal should be a major cause for concern for Brenham residents and those who fish from the lake and consume the fish they catch. Contrary to what many proponents of fracking claim, the risk of groundwater and in this case, surface water pollution is very high. Take a look at the following site and judge if you want any of these toxins inadvertently released into Lake Somerville.

  8. This is just another example of government extending itself into private enterprise to raise money when government cannot manage the money they already have. This is even worse since this has the potential of destroying our water supply. I hope our government is not so stupid to approve this; just look at Flint, Michigan.
